Elephant Island

Elephant Bay Taiharuru

Elephant Bay

We call the area in front of the Guesthouse Elephant Bay.  It’s named after Elephant Island which sits a few metres offshore, protected by the bluffs which define the bay. We named the island this as it looks distictly like an elephant kneeling in the water when viewed from The Guesthouse. The prevailing westerly winds blow offshore so much of the time the bay is calm and perfect for swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and exploring. For those that just want to kick back it is a real suntrap, perfect for sun bathing or reading quietly in your own private bay.

The area around the island is a water lovers paradice with outstanding snorkeling, diving and fishing. The island includes a beautiful underwater arch full of fish, a cave and a blowhole that makes its presence known on the rougher days.

This part of the coastline has spectacular land forms and is part of the renouwned Tutukaka Coastline that stretches from Tutukaka South to the Whangarei heads.
